HER TOP TIPS FOR A SPRING-LIKE BEDROOM
Spring is just around the corner, and as it approaches so does the time to clean out your home, and make a fresh start. Julie Rogers, Head of Housekeeping at The Lowry Hotel, part of the Rocco Forte Collection, gives some welcome advice on that all-important spring clean.
1. Before you begin take some time to look around your room. The first thing that you need to decide is if you need everything that you have. Julie suggests asking yourself three key questions:
“Before beginning spring cleaning, look at your bedroom. Is it cluttered? Does everything have a place? Do you still enjoy the space? These three questions are key to identifyiong the best place to start your cleaning. It may be that you need to empty your room of clutter such as old magazines, pieces of paper, broken make-up items and so on. By clearing your space and throwing out the things that you don’t need, you will feel more invigorated to start cleaning.”
2. Once you have de-cluttered, begin dusting. Use a damp duster and go over surfaces, cleaning them until they sparkle. By doing this some of the room dust will move around. Don’t worry about this, as you can tackle any remaining surface dust with the hoover. Use a specially formulated wood polish on wooden surfaces – this will also give your room a clean aroma.
3. In The Lowry Hotel, Julie’s team focus on windows when doing a full room clean. Julie says:
“Windows are hugely important and keeping them clean will brighten up your room no end. A top tip for cleaning windows is using vinegar to remove stains. Use an old newspaper and a small amount of brown vinegar and scrub over the windows. If possible turn the windows inside out and clean both sides.”
Another tip to brighten up your windows, is to wash curtains. Never wash any curtains on a higher temperature than 30 incase they shrink, but ensure that you use your favourite washing powder as the curtains will emanate this fragrance in to your room.
4. Vacuuming your room is important, as this is where the most amount of dirt is picked up. Make sure that every item of furniture is moved and you clean behind everything. Pull out chests of drawers and wardrobes and vacuum behind them, most importantly, move your behind.
5. Finally, change bedding for a really fresh feel. Use spring like colours for the best effect, for example yellow or bright white. Fluff up pillows and ensure all surfaces are clear. For a special treat, pick yourself some spring-like flowers, daffodils or tulips and display in the bedroom. A final spritz of air freshener around the base of the bed and other furniture will ensure that your room smells fresher for longer.
